Sometimes amazing things happen. This is one of them. *click the link*
New friends of mine from Paris shared this video with me late night after the bars. We sat around drank Heineken (of all beers) ate chocolates and the rest enjoyed some salami. I realized after spending the evening together that although language and geographical location may separate us, we are not all that different from one another. We have jobs. We have relationships. We entertain ourselves, enjoy travel, a good laugh and a couple of drinks. Life is good.
Growing up in the US, going out to eat was always an occasion. At the end of every meal, the anticipation of what treat might come along with the bill was of utmost concern. Would it be those yucky starbust mints that I choked on until I turned blue in the face when I was 3yrs old at Mother’s Day Brunch. Or would it be dum dums or maybe even safety pops. My ultimate favorite was always the chocolate mints! Way to go on that one Olive Garden!
Well…when I visited Paris last week, I learned 2 things about dining in France (among many others). #1. They do not understand why we call it a check and not a bill. Obviously, we use it interchangeably but my waitress was right. This makes little to no sense that we call it a check. Bravo Frenchie on calling me out. #2. At the end of my very first meal in Paris, when we got the check, the anticipated treat was different than any I had ever seen before. They were little marshmallow candies! Yes those are banana flavored…See photo Love it!
Santa Monica you’re on it!
It’s almost 6 o’clock as I rush for the ‘end of day’ pickup at Scribble Press (scribblepress.com) in SM…I finally see a spot to park and boom! NO Go…but to my surprise, a smile grew across my face. Parking for Electrical Vehicles ONLY. Need I say more? Amazing, keep it coming! - R
PORTO’S Cafe & Bakery…
Today’s 1st task…cheesy rolls to client at Disney. I had NO idea what I was in for as I pulled up to this Cuban Bakery. Walking down a long corridor, my anticipation heightened. I turned the corner and there it was…an immaculate array of every baked good in its most prestigious form! I couldn’t believe it! From young children with their grandparents to women bringing home the family favorites, there I was, Vegan on a Candida Cleanse (http://www.thecandidadiet.com/). For real, work had to send me here, I almost didn’t make it out of there…Instead 12 cheesy rolls and…….NO that will be all. I did it. Success…But I’ll be back and you should check it out too! www.portosbakery.com
Tonight 7pm Casa Del Mar in Santa Monica…Come out, EAT DRINK & BE PRESENT.
UNIQUE FIND…
Decided to grab a few things at the CO-OP yesterday in Santa Monica http://www.coopportunity.com/ and my last minute (non-eco friendly) item was a bottled water! I know it’s terrible; however, my body was in desperate need, so did it. To my surprise, there it was… ED HARDY WATER…”You have got to be kidding me,” is all that was going through my brain and at the CO-OP? One of the many places I go to avoid the mainstream, mind-clogging junk that America pushes everywhere else you shop.
Rather than let this encounter take a turn for the negative, I decided to immediately ask myself, “Why is this interesting?”
Flashback to earlier in the day, post yoga, cup of hot ginger lemon tea and the Style Section of the LA Times and you find this…
“L.A. has a long-standing reputation for bleached, implanted and botoxed blonds in bedazzled magenta tanks (Ed Hardy be damned), but innovative new group of local designers and artists is seemingly an antidote. The Design communities in areas like Abbot Kinney (word!) and Silver Lake are pushing back against that reputation. People are more thoughtful about what they present, which resonates in fashion, music & art. Designers from elsewhere visit, experience the credibility first hand and SPREAD THE LOVE.” (LA Times - sunday nov. 22, 2009)
For every 1 of them there’s 2 of us kickin’ it somewhere real.
